Yo!

There is a general tendency with us to mordernize our names, add accent to the english that we speak and wear dress aping the western culture. I was just wondering why are we so obsessed with aping the west? Is it because we feel being that way is hep and being ourselves is demeaning?
The newer generations are moving more towards the west in terms of dressing. There are lot of guys who do not know how to wear a dhoti. I am ashamed to say I am one amoung the people who do not know how to wear dhoti. But I am happy that I tried dhoti a couple of times. But I feel really very insecure wearing dhoti. Both times when I wore, I needed a belt to have some peace of mind while going around. I feel really awkward especially when driving a scooter or a bike while wearing a dhoti.
Similarly now a days its a big achievement for girls if they wear a saree. But atleast girls wear saree more frequent than guys wearing dhotis. In many colleges and offices saree is accepted as a formal dress but thats not the case with dhoti. Should dhoti be listed as a formal dress for men?
I am asking this because, if things go at this rate, we would loose our tradional dress slowly. Now itself lungi and Dhoti have lost the battle with short pants and trousers respectively. Similarly for girls, Saree lost to salwar kameez/chudithar, salwar kameez/chudithar is loosing to dresses like skirt, trousers etc.
Now to the names, I have come across a few instances where people like to be called by a different name. They change their names to make it appear more westernized. A few names that I can think of are
Padmanabhan - Paddy
Nikil - Nick
Karthik - Kart
Arvindh - Arvi
Jagan - Jag
Hari - Harry
Vijay - VJ
Kandasamy - Kandy
Most of the names that end with samy like Muthusamy, Kandasamy, Ponnusamy becomes either Sam or Samy.
Gayathri - G3
Nandini - Nandi
Maragathavalli - Magi
That's about the names that I could think of, if you know any do list it down in the comments.
Enjoy the following video, its very funny. This is a pretty old video though. The guys shown in the video are exactly the kind of guys I am telling about.

Wish you a very Happy Diwali and Eid Mubarak!!!

Varta...

    Hi KK,
Firstly Diwali wishes 2 u! Have a blast of a good time! :)
Next regd Yo!, what say man....most ppl abbreviate their names for convience...esp when they r in a foreign land, the locals find it difficult 2 pronounce & hence the short form. And yes these days our young generation fall prey to the western culture & do whatever suits them under the pretext of being hep! Maybe thats y I've chosen short names fr my kids (which i think is relatively easy to pronounce by all!) But who knows thenext generation might decide to shorten it further! :)

And as for the dress.....I've actually just started realising the beauty of saris! I used to wear it occassionally only for sp occassions. Now I think i'll wear it more often but again I cant relate to wearing it daily/more often...I somehow feel that its so sp that it can b worn on sp occassions to make it more special!

And as for guys in dhotis again I like 2 c them that way only in weddings/religious functions. Come 2 think of it(maybe cos v rnt used to) it does look a little weird if men were to roam around more frequently in dhotis isnt it? Its also nice to c men in Kurta Pyjama/sherwani etc. I like that! :)

    yo kk.. ssup?? :))
haha.. well, what you say makes sense. but hey, salwar kameez is also a traditional dress and that is being made compulsory in most colleges in india. i rem there was a dress code in my engg college, we had to wear salwar suits everyday and how i used to curse that princi.. :)
i dont wear indian clothes anymore except on occassions. i speak westernized english. I do things that are probably not norm, in the indian scheme of things. but in my mind, im more indian and trditional than maybe a lot of the saree wearing and proper speaking ones put together.
u know wht, i think its all in the mind .. at the end of the day, its not what you wear.. its what you think and believe in.
wish you a very happy and prosperous diwali too! :)

@Has to be me - Hi HTBM!! Diwali wishes for you and your family!!! abreviating names for convenience sake is perfectly ok, because even I have done that. It will be a night mare for Americans to call out my full name :) They find it adventurous to read my name where ever I go :) You did a wise thing by naming your kids with short names, I am surely gonna do that. But there are lots of people who shorten their name just for style. Like one of my friend called Padmanabhan likes to be called Paddy than being called Paddu. Just because it sounds hep.
When your son likes to see his mom in saree you have to wear saree more often ;) Its your duty :) hehehehe...
Now a days not many wear dhoti's for marriages or religios functions too :) In Kerala the dhoti trend prevails well mainly because we cant enter many temples without a dhoti :) Sherwani is really good except for Chennai climate. But the problem is even if we put on little weight it wont fit. One of mine does not fit me anymore :(
A long reply for you :)

@Venkatesh - I absolutely agree that ppl should wear what ever they feel comfortable. But at the same time we have the duty to guard our traditional dress from extinction too :) If not for us who else :)
//I am not pointing out anything as the fittest though//
    Playing safe uhn??? :)

@Karthik B.S - Super duper!! yenakaga yosichu yosichu sollureengale.... yen mela ungalukku than yevaluv paasam...aawwwwwwww :)
    //Madhusoodhanan -- monkey-ah??//
    hahahah LOL!!!! :)
While Ramki and Venky are ok types, because its names shortened for convenience but Maddy is to make it sound hep. :)
    Thanks sir :)

@S0ul - Yo S0ul!!!, nothin much, wassup ther??
I agree to you that its all in the mind. Though you dont wear indian clothes, you still respect indian culture and traditions. But there are a lot of folks who think its degrading to follow Indian traditions. They feel West is of higher grade or something. Which is wrong. I have just used things which exhibits what they think or believe in.
Wish you a very Happy Diwali and a prosperous New year :) (For sindi's its new year). I can escape bursting a lakshmi pataaki in wheeling (there are so many Indians). But you dont try burning a sparkler inside your home and make the fire alarm go off :D

@IndianAngel - Wish you too a very Happy Diwali Prasanna!!! Have a blast!!!

Japan's cultural dress is extinct... but it wil never happen to india. Indian clothes have a certain flair that is very classic and no matter how 'modernised' or 'westernised' a person may be, the occasion dressing up in indian clothes is special. but i dont think they are appropriate for work.
regarding names... i have a simple first name, but my last name is 13 letters. and i do get tired of spelling it and people asking me if i'm done like 10 times before i really am. i dont blame people with a mile long indian name cutting it short to make life easier. i blame the parents... :) when ash and bips and jo are accepted.. why not.

The Dhothi actually looks very good wen worn properly. But i don think it mite ever be accepted as a formal attire.

The thing abt apin the west has been thr for so long now. Wat irritates me is ppl changin their identity drastically in order to be be a part of the western culture. Have they ever changed themselves for us? Some of the foreigner's names are so tuff to pronounce but we still take an effort to do it rite.So y cant we let them take an effort?

  • At October 23, 2006 3:11 AM, Blogger chitra said…

Down south, the politicians still wear dhoti and kurtapyjama is considered a party wear in North. And even now, most of them, whom I know, come in that black dhoti which they are supposed to wear before going to Sabari.

There is a matter of comfort level in the dress u are wearing. As offor aping is considered, the grass on the other side is always green.

Yes, people do shorten their names when they shift places, but i feel basically it is because no one would like to hear their name mispronounced. So, for the comfort level of others, if gayathri is called g3 rather than anglised version of it, irt is v. much acceptable.

@Spicelover - I too hope it doesnt happen to the Indian traditional dress. The women's traditional dress is still prevalent than the men's tradional dress. Well my first name has 11 letters and my last names has 15 letters. You can imagine how bored I would become spelling my name :)

@Madhu - Welcome here Madhu!!! Hope to see you around. I am not able to see your blog. Let me know the URL.
Neah, KK has a longer name :)

@Krithika - No problem :) Nice points you have brought forward on the names from tamil epics and talking tamil. Wish people realize mother tongue is not derogatory.

@Brute - No probs dude :) Well I dont mean to say that we need to be stuck with time and be stagnant in one generation. But at the same time we have our individuality as Indians. Why make that extinct in the name of westernization. Hope you had a nice diwali :)

@Priya - Oh yeah, that part is really really funny...with so much hatred he says "Muthusamy Karupiah paati!!!" :)
But I dont understand why we should feel insecure? Aping the west doesnt make us look any good either... :)

    @Karthik.B.S - ungalukku illatha tha :)

@Reborn - Names mis-spelt in imp. documents is another problem of having long names I guess :)
Kudos to you for knowing how to wear a saree!! :)

Welcome here Ada-paavi :) you have nice name :) Keep visiting :)

@Keshi - You laughing??? You will understand when you come to know my full name. My first name has 11 letters and last name 15 letters :)

Funny :) Bala, am I seeing some one getting defensive here?? :)
Veti katta theriyuma??? Super duper!! Yen peru solli Coldstone'la oru ice cream vaangikonga :)

@Arpita - //The Dhothi actually looks very good wen worn properly.//
Did you have actor Napolean in mind while making this statement ;) hehehehe He's one guy who makes it look pathetic :) We are always used to adjusting for others I guess :) That's why, only we change our names for the convenience of others :) But yeah, the same thing irritates me too :)

@Chitra - Politicians just wear ethnic wear to make it appear more nationalistic. Even if they dont really do, they just do it in public to maintain their images :) Yes we always thing grass is greener on the otherside, but we might end up loosing our identity for something thats not that green :)
If names are modified to make it simpler for others then I guess its perfectly fine, but many change it for making it sound hep. I feel thats not good :)

@Has to be me - Well my Diwali was about to become a disaster, but some how pulled it to make it good by going to Milwaukee :)
