What's the driver?

What should be the driving factor? Should it be career opurtunities in your place or should it be driven by the individuals interest? I am not sure how many of you will agree with me that in India we generally go by the career options available. I too have done the same.
But thinking now I sometimes feel that I should have gone by my interests and not by the career opurtunities that are there. I have heard a lot about foreign countries where people go by their interests. I have heard people telling me that one day a person may be a truck driver but another day he might be in the IT department of a company. Another instance which I heard from my colleague, he said that he met a person in Hawaii who is currently a tourist guide in Hawaii but before this he was a programmer earlier.
In India, now everyone becomes a Doctor or an Engineer. Not many people consider other options like for example Forrensic study. I never knew that such a course existed until I visited Madras university along with my friend once.
Like for example if we take Stephen Robert Irwin he could have taken a job just like anyone else, but he went by his interest to become a Crocodile hunter. I feel he has acheived something in his life by being someone distinct during his times. I admire him a lot. May his soul rest in peace and his family be given the courage and strength to overcome this huge loss.
Is money the only driving factor for us? Should't we value our interest also while deciding upon the profession that you want to choose?

Varta...

    Meeeeeeeee firsht!!!!!!! Yahooooooooo!!!

Seri, first title paathona, i was wondering at happened to ur english. THot it should have been " Who is hte driver" and i was expecting you to narrate to us something abt ur trip last weekend.

Seri. Leave that matter. Now, i feel, it is necessary for us to follow our interest and try to pave our way to achieving wat we want. Of course, at the end of hte day, money seems to be the priority. So, we got to make sure, that we couple our talent and interest in the right way. If our interest were so die hard and if v truely, madly dreamt to become what we want, then, i am sure that itself could be the drive to take us to the realisation of our dream.

FANTASTIC post KK! U r 100% correct. ppl should do what their interests r based upon and what they enjoy doing the most (Steve being an example) not what everyone else is doing and what's popular. But somehow we become slaves of the trend and money. It's so wrong but thats what most human beings r like. Very few ppl do what they really like and enjoy doing. Such ppl rthe happiest in life.

**. I have heard people telling me that one day a person may be a truck driver but another day he might be in the IT department of a company.

thats so true. In Aus too there r many ppl like that. I met a guy at Uni once - he was a doctor before but he dropped all that to become a marketing guy. Also my carpet-cleaner was once a programmer!

So u see...some ppl realise where their real interests r. Some dont. It's upto u to do decide whether u wanna be satisfied in what u do or just go with the trend. I think I have gone with the trend and I feel so stupid for that!

    Keshi.

The individual interest is wat shld count. But sadly financial positions dont allow us to take up such luxuries. And it requires lot of courage to give up a high paying job to pursue ur interests.

True True True! We should value our interest while deciding upon the profession. But sadly, we dont have the freedom of selecting the profession we like back in India. We such a hug population, and 100 people always available to do the job of one person - whats more important is only the survival of the fittest- cant help it ! :(

KK tho I agree with u, I tend to disagree too! AGreed fr the obvious reasons cited by u.

The main reason I disagree is the practicality. Eg, say KK is v,interested in art & so becomes an artist. He wants to sell his art & make his living. So he wants to organise fr an exhibition. Takes a loan with difficulty & organises fr the same. End of the exhibition he doesnt earn enuff to make his ends( & his family) meet & goes thru a financial crisis. Was it worth it?

My option wud be, unless u cant make a decent living out of ur interest dont opt fr it.

RAther go for ur profession & if u r really so passionate abt ur interests, pursue them as a second line. And if it is that rewarding, might as well continue with it as the main stream.

Hmm so r u planning on a change in profession?! ;)

interest is deftly high up on the list... and in a perfect world shd be the ONLY motivating factor to do anythg.. but these days the driving factor can also be a lot of other things.. like the financial aspect of a job.. the location of a particular job( i;ve seen this with people married in the US, they try to find jobs where their spouse is, so that they can live together).. etc etc.. i dont think anythg is more gratifying than doing somethg you like.. which is why i completely envy people who have the b*** to give up a safe and secure unininteresting job/ position to do somethg totally out of the ordinary.. like i get these weird ideas of chucking it all up and taking a cosmetogoly course or studying hair styling n design and go bk to india and open up a swanky up market salon.. ;-) but thts not practical.. hehe .. so im stuck being a chemical engr.. whts the craziest u;ve ever wanted to do???

@Prithz - I too was not very comfy with the title initially but I felt that this is the best I could think of. So left it like that.
But if the job based on the interest has more probability of failure then we tend to go as per the trend. So in that case money takes the priority.
BTW you get the puliyotharai :)

@Keshi - Thanks! Yup, I too have gone by the trend, now I repend when ever I think about it. That led me to write this post :)
But due to family situations its mostly not practical to go by the interest.

@Janani - Welcome here! Hope to see you around. :)
Sure you can blogroll me :)

@Arpita - Well said!! Yes it takes a lot of courage to give up a high paying job to pursue our interest. But we also need aome support from people who are around us.

@IndianAngel - Very True, the population is also a main reason for this. Does that mean in India people can never go by their interest?

@Has to be me - I agree completely with you. But if incase the interest cannot be taken as a second option then what do we do? Say incase I want to make films, I can't do it part time, I need to be fully involved inorder to succeed.
Well I think I have answered your question too :)

@Ganesh - Oh yeah we will surely.

@S0ulasylum - Nice one s0ul. I agree with you. Hairstylist? wow!! Good that you became a chemical engnr :) Many are saved. :)
I dont know if it crazy, but I would like to become a cinematographer. :)

@Syam - Sorry to know about your experience with you interest. Hope you are able to take it up in future and become successful in the same. Best of luck sir :)
I am so bugged with IT that I thought of Truck Driver too as an option :) though not seriously :)

nice post kk....in my humble opinion i feel interest upon career(note it's neither interest nor career separately...) should be cultivated in d school days itself so dat v have a focussed goal and enjoy what we do. And dat is d major flaw here...in india we rely upon passive education i.e we give importance more to our text books that's y we churn up more engineers and docs rather than race mechanics or top line fashion designers..... but i 've seen in other foreign countries(western & sinapore,HK,japan)they give more thrust upon "find and learn" so that they've more interest in their study. And moreover they know wat they are good at and focus upon that rather than being forced to read something that they
're not comfortable with or not interested in.

western schools have many varied areas of study and even 'alternate' career options are encouraged. And one more thing in western countries alternate career can survive and they sell wat come..but here there's a stigma....how many parents'll encourage if their son say "I'd like to become a plumber"?????

A BIG question....it's a matter of pride in the society rather than self-satisfaction or interest....and it takes a lotsa courage to give up high flying career to pursue one's interest....a big risk...

seri seri seeing the essays written in last post's comment i thought y not continue that...hee hee :)

I remember when I passed out 10th, all wanted to know if I will go for a doc/eng'. I said hell no. I need my own choice and freedom to wat I wanna be and my dad gave a green signal to go on what I wanted to do.
Here I am today. Thou I don't work now, I continue doing certification and upgrading my skills for future.

@Jeevan - Thanks Jeevan! Well nothing exciting about driving to write about. :)

@GolmaalGopal - Nice points Gopal! I agree with you on all the points mentioned by you. I seriously think pride in the society does play a major role and also the risk taking factor is also low in India. Leave parents, how many of us would take a low paying job when we have a high paying job in hand? Not many I guess. :)

@Priya - Wow! Nice to know that you go by your interests. I think you will be one in thousands to be so lucky. Kudos to your family to encourage you. All the best for your certifications and wish you a very bright future. :)

@Karthik.B.S - Hmmm...not really. I know a lot of people who have taken Civil Engineering. :)

Nice post !! We can't always do what we want to. When we have any special talent, its good to develop it and do it as a hobby but ultimately when money matters profession is different. Yeah !! We would be lucky if we are able to be successful in the area of our interest.

There are very few Steve's that's why they are examples rather exceptions. To give you an example, I love cooking from say when I was 15. I used to do it as a hobby. I wanted to be a doctor. My parents wanted me to be an IT professional. I thought of going to catering college. But today, thinking of it is funny. By God's grace, I'm in a position where my job is just for my satisfaction, but is it that way for others? Even cricketers, play cricket as a part-time job. Dancing, Instruments, Singing, Cooking are all hobbies. Converting a hobby into a profession is an art !!

Hobbies are what your heart wants to do and job is what your mind says to !!

I cant help agree with you more KK !

It is important for people to pursue their interests and work with something thats well aligned to interests ! Unfortunately, we are so short term focussed that immediate 'gold mines' override the long term potential ! Very quickly the mines run out of gold and we are left with nothing to pursue !

Purusing interests, with great detail, will get the money. If not now, at some point. One needs to keep improvising to be able to marry interests and income generating opportunities !

    Great post kk !

Passion for doing you are doing gives you success! This comes in only when your interest is genuine. Many a time in life however, you do not do what you like but end up liking what you are do. Apart from Interest there is the luck factor which determines how life moves on!
