I don't know

I don't know why people are so reluctant to say that they don't know something when they don't know. When I think about it, I don't understand why they are so scared or ashamed to say that they don't know something.
I feel its perfefctly ok to say "I don't know" when I dont know. I don't like to beat around the bush like how many people do. I dont feel ashamed to say "I don't know". I can't be expected to know everything in this World. There are a lot of unknowns in this World for me. I had one such incident during one of my interviews long time back, It was a technical interview and the interviewer was asking all kind of questions. I answered some of questions for which I knew the answer, for the rest I told him directly that I don't know. So this guy asked me, How I could say I don't know in an interview. I told him that I am learning from my experience and I haven't worked in the area that he was questioning and hence I could not answer his questions. Well I did'nt get that job. But I felt that I did the right thing.
I have also come across people who alter their resume as per the requirement advertisement. They say that they know a lot of things that they actually don't. I feel its completely wrong to do that way. Why not say "I don't know" when they don't know?
I also believe that unless we accept that we don't know, we can't learn. If X beleive s that he knows when he does'nt know then I am pretty sure that X won't be putting the effort to learn what ever he does not know.
When I searched the net I came across some interesting analysis on this subject. Most of us think that we either know something or we don't know something. But the author says that the more acurate way to look at this is
You can either know or not know something, and you can also know or not know whether you know or not.

As per the author, knowledge can be split into four quadrants with "what I know" as a dimension and "awareness of my knowledge" as the second dimension.
The best quadrant to be is in the first quadrant, To know that you know. If not in that quadrant then it is better to be in the 3rd quadrant, where you know that you don't know so you can learn what you don't know. You become teachable when you are in this quadrant. When you don't know what you know, you just wasting your knowledge.
When you are in the fourth quadrant, where you don't know that you don't know, this is when the communication becomes a problem. A person in this quadrant become self-proclaimed experts, ready to share their opinions to anybody ready to listen and thus refuse to listen or learn from others.

reading this i thot it was something like i mean what i mean joke of kamal. good post, simply stated it needs only a good heart and less ego to agree that you dont know lot of things in the world! I agree there are lot of things in the world that you cant know however hard you try!

cool post....adhe dhaan...same policy here...and i too said "i don't know" for almost 30% of the questions that was asked in my interview...eppidiyo i got dat job which i didn't expect at all...even many of my frnds adviced me to say somthing or the other and not to accept dat i do not know a thing...but i decided against it(apparam naa onnu solla avanga adhulendhu innum kelvi keppaanga...i'll be in a mess)..well v could always try some time tacics like sayin "i need a little time to recollect" and then of course say "sorry,i couldn't recollect it"...hee hee.. :)

//You can either know or not know something, and you can also know or not know whether you know or not.//

    KK,
Yup I can understand y ppl cant accept & be truthful abt something that they actually dont know of! Who knows their side of the story....maybe they r just trying to impress the other person & prove / show off their wee bit of knowledge on the subject! Attitude problems u c!

I maybe wrong, but I somehow feel that this is more American! Cos I've seen this more in America & Americans than in India. Ofcourse not all Americans or not all Indians & I dont want to generalise but by & large thats what I feel.

Its better to be honest than becoming a culprit later. I have faced few situations in interview. I just tell them, I can learn quick than saying I don't know.

But nothing wrong in saying the truth. Some ppl' need some excuse or may be that person don't know and was only testing you if you are better than him/her. People are insecure and thaz wat it is about.

KK, This is a perfect quandry that is so prevelant in a competitive world. Saying "Dont Know" could have so many 'perceived implications' on people ! Thats one reason, why people dont stand up and say i dont know ! Frankly, in a competitive world like ours, it requires some guts to do it !

@IndianAngel - Yep simply takes a good heart sans insecurity and ego to agree.
//there are lot of things in the world that you cant know however hard you try!//
    Well said IndianAngel!

@GolmaalGopal - Way to go!!! Gimme a five buddy! I use the same statement saying I can't recollect it :) Same pinch :)

@Keshi - Yes, Ego is one of the primary reasons but insecurity also plays a hand in this. People just dont want to be left behind by saying that they dont know.
//next time just tell such ppl, U JUST DONT KNOW.//
yep, I have felt like doing that many times, as you know I am a very nice guy(self proclaimed), so I cant hurt someone by saying that ;)

@Has to be me - Yep attitude problem. But I guess this aint a nice idea to impress, they will fall flat on the ground after some days :)
In my experience, I find Americans more open in telling that they don't know than Indians. I have seen a lot of Indians doing this sad thing.

@Syam - Attendence potachu :) puliotharai illaina yenna, G3 thalaya adamanam vechavathu (Singaravelan style) ungalukku biryani'ye anupuren :)

@S0ulasylum - Seems like you are in the fourth quadrant :)

@Priya - I too tell them that I can learn if they give me some time. You hit the nail right on the head. I too feel insecurity is the primary reason for this attitude.

@Prithz - Life is like a movie, should have a good mix of both, comedy and seriousness :)
Great to know that you dont feel bad to say you dont know. Good Keep it up. :)

    @G3 - Nalla velai thapichen :)
I know, I know that I used lot of know :) (to be read in Raguvaran style)

@Syam - Yenna athukula Winter yethir parkireenga pola irukku...Atha padikrathukulla thalaiye suthiduchu :) Ithu yenna siru pulla thanamana vilayatu ;)

@Kavi - Yes, you are right, I think this is a quandary of a competitive world. But I feel we need to have some ethics, else things might take a bad turn later.

Apart from ego it is is also the fact that many don't know that they need to know. Sad but true.Kids are quick to learn 'coz they do not have ego which stops them from learning & they are alert to everything happening around them naturally!

We have a lot to learn from them.
