Gandhigiri

Hope most of you got a chance to watch Lage Raho Munnabhai. I thouroughly enjoyed watching the movie. This movie was about something that I always believed in for the past 3-4 years. The movie is about Gandhism or so called Gandhigiri, following the long forgotten principles of Mahatma Gandhi.
Well I don't specifically try to follow Gandhi's principles, but I follow my heart. I do things what I feel is right and true. My heart surely knows when I am not true and when I am true. So I guess Gandhigiri is an extension of that. I always wonder why is it so difficult to be truthful. Indians try to be as truthful as possible when they are in other countries, but when they are in our country then all the truthfulness vanishes. Is it so difficult to be truthful?
In U.S I have come across lots of Indians who try to cheat for small things just because the system trusts them. Again those things are not only by Indians but to me it hurts to see Indians cheating. Some of the examples are as follows:
1. In cinema theatres in U.S, we will be checked for the ticket at the entrance itself. Once you cross this section, you can actually get into any theatre hall and watch any movie. The system trusts you to go to the movie which ever you bought the ticket for. I have seen a lot of Indians watch multiple movies using a single ticket just because it is technically possible. Once I had an argument with a person on this, their argument is when the system allows, why not do it? Its a flaw in the system and we are using it. My argument was when the system is trusting us why not be truthful to it.
2. Again in U.S, you have the facility of buying stuff from a store and return it if you dont like the performance of the thing that you bought. I have seen and heard a lot if incidents where Indians buy stuffs which ever they have a one time necessity and return the product after using it saying they are not satisfied. The customers are given this facility to buy a product and have maximum satisfaction. But we are mis-using it. Now due to this, many stores are rethinking this policy.

3. Music, movie and sofware piracy, most of us do this. I too used to do it. But I have realised its wrong. Its equivalent to stealing someones property. If your in software field, imagine if someone in your team tries to portray whatever you did as if he/she did, to your manager. Won't you feel hurt and angry? Trust me, it does, I have been through a situation where a team mate of mine was trying to steal my work by telling the manager that she did it. I am sure its pretty common in all offices and all fields too. When we do piracy or encourage piracy that's exactly how the owner of that music, movie of software feels. Only way to deal piracy is by, each one of us becoming against piracy.
I would like to discuss about another aspect of Gandhigiri. Fight for the truth using non-violence. I am not a vivid follower of the sport, squash, but my blogger friend Karthik is. Through his blog and Niveditha's blog I understand that the Dipika Pallikal is a budding sportswoman for India and is ranked first in the under 15 asian category in squash. Inspite of her scintillating performances in many tournaments, she has been denied a place in the Asian games squad to Doha this year due to some politics in the selection. I feel we can use the powerful medium of blog to protest against this and bring it to notice to the concern officers. Thus atleast in future Dipika and other sportsperson will not be hampered by politics such as this.
To conclude I would say Lage raho munnabhai was a very thought provoking movie interwoven with fun. I just hope people dont leave the message at the movie hall and just take the fun with them when they leave.

Varta...

and u can see d state of affairs of our sports...being a country of over 100 crores and just one or two medals....sure v're rich in talents...but wen it comes to nurturing it......nothing...

in that aspect i admire australian and the chinese sport federations they do so much for their sportspersons...even if some private federations come up to help the state one's work in tandem rather than fighting and brooding over such issues and makin big and dirty politics out of it...

Secondly, politics hampering a sportspersons career has to be strongly voiced and if u want to use blogs to do the same, i think it makes a lot of sense. thought provoking stuff. for once nothg biaatchy from me, :) will restrict that to email. till then go rejoice. do i NEED to explain that now?????? hahaha

hey i totally understand that some people lack basic decency.. It is not about telling the truth, it is about decency and etiquette.. Just because you do not have someone to watch you, does not mean you can do anything.. They believe that fully grown adults do not require someone to guard them and expect them to follow the system without anyone having to impose it on them.

Lage raho was a good movie. After a long gap of time, I could get to see a real clean movie and it managed to preach without actually making us feel that we are preached.

And regarding your point of Indians taking advantage, I dont think you should restrict it to Indians. there might be many Americans who are doing it but you would nt be aware of it. And There are so many instances where the indians have been duped because of their hospitable nature . How can you forget that British managed to rule us because of our gillible nature. I am sure on a micro level, you would be taking advantage of your parents , friends and siblings. Just because, no financial transaction is involved, you might nt remember it or give importance to it.
I think it is just humane!

    >>>What do you think we should do to end this attitude?

man.. just got time to comment..

Identify the root cause(s) and uproot it :-)

    1) this practice of exploiting the truth is being passed when a new student / workere arrives.. prevent this by increasing the awareness.. blog is a good medium..
    2) display strong objection when someone does this and make them realize.. i guess most of the pple do something coz they think it is right or at least think it is not wrong..

this deserves a separate post rather a looooooong comment.. ;-)

    Happy Diwali to everyone...

    Please get your facts correct.
The Asian Games is not a junior event. The Indian team consists of Ritwik, Saurav & Joshna. They are national champions at the senior level and play consistantly on the international circuit. They also have top 50 world rankings. Hence they have been selected to represent the country.

Dipika Pallikal plays on the junior circuit and not on the senior circuit. May I suggest that facts be checked and confirmed before posting. Please blog responsibly

@Nevyas - Thanks for your comment. I am sorry if the facts stated in my post was not correct. As mentioned in my post, I am not much of a follower of Squash. My knowledge is limited to what I read on blogs. As a well wisher of Indian Sports I brought this for discussion. Sorry if it was wrong.

KK, let me mention the facts here. Govt has a selection crititeria for taking part in sport events. Not any and every one can go and in team sports only certian sports go eg our football team (as on date) has not been given permission to go.
Three Indians were selected to represent the country Joshna Chinappa in women and Ritwik Bhattacharya and Saurav Ghosal in men. All are senior level National champions, play on the senior circuit and are ranked in the top 50 of the world. Dipika Pallikal is a good junior level player on the world circuit but does not play on the senior circuit, nor is she ranked among the top 50 of the world, nor is she a national champion and her selection would have been against govt policy. Her coaches felt it wud be better for her to win at the British Open (the Wimbledon of squash) in the u17 category in Jan 07, rather than waste valueable coaching time in a tournament where she would not do well.

If you are accusing someone you better get your facts correct and its better to check newspapers using say Google news rather than blogs. I think you need to put out a comment in the main body that you may have got your facts incorrectly rather than in comment no 63.
Its sad people use the media for their vested interests. You may also recall that for the same Asian Games, a sportsman who did not get the partner he desired, made a fuss all over the newspapers and said he would not play for the country. and people from his organisation.

if miss pallikal felt she was so good on the senior circuit, how come she has not entered any competiotions in her individual capacity

Article in Hindustan Times:India's sports ministry trims Asian Games flab

India's sports ministry has drastically slashed its Asian Games contingent, leaving out no-hopers at the continent's showpiece event, media reported on Wednesday.
The ministry pruned the squad to 387 from the original 589 proposed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), removing football, basketball, handball, sepak takraw, triathlon, ten-pin bowling, rugby sevens and fencing teams.

The government, which foots the bill for the entire contingent it agrees on, also scratched several names from other squads like badminton, boxing and wrestling.

Only five of the 10 boxers were cleared while six of the seven Greco-Roman wresters were dropped for the December 1-15 Games in the Qatari capital of Doha, the reports said.

The sports ministry declined to give reasons for the cutback, but the Times of India said the move was made to avoid embarrassment to the country at the Games.

"It seems the cash-strapped ministry has decided to stop sending 'also-rans' and 'passengers' to big events," the newspaper said.

"It will not only help them save money but also help them save the blushes, because all the squads scratched were not seen as medal prospects."

Teams not cleared by the sports ministry can still make the trip to Doha at their own expense, but IOA chief Suresh Kalmadi said he was hopeful the ministry will reconsider its decision.

"It's a big squad, we agree, but we have to look at the future," said Kalmadi. "This was perhaps the best way to let our athletes have some good preparation since we are going to stage the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

"Sports like rugby sevens will be played at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games would give players the necessary international exposure."

At the last Asian Games in Busan in 2002, India won 11 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals, finishing eighth in the overall tally.
