Why talk Greek n Latin?

One of the most annoying thing which I have noticed in a multi cultural work atmosphere is people talking in a language with zero consideration for the other people around who don't understand the language that is spoken. Most of the times the language happens to be the mother tongue of the majority of the people in that group.
Initially I used to think, only I used to feel abased. But when I discuss about this to many people, I understand many people find it very uncomfortable when the people around them talk in some language which they dont understand. I had my first experience of this when I was working in Karnataka. I experienced this many times when I was with a malayalee gang. So I started avoiding to go along with any malayalee gang after that. But later faced the same with some north Indian colleagues too. My sister used to complain about the people from Andra who talk in Telugu, without considering that there is a person with them who does not understand their language. Then a Telugu friend of mine used to complain to me about tamilians who talk in Tamil even though they knew that there were some non tamil speaking people in the group. So I realised people irrespective of where they come from everyone faces this problem and do nothing but point their fingers at some group or the other. They don't think that even they might be doing the same to someone else.
Another common thing that I have noticed on this front is, say if two tamilians discuss about this issue, then they tend to boast that their community (community I mean people who speak the same language) are not like that and they always consider the other people and talk in a common language. Similarly Marathi, Gujarathi, Telugu, Malayalee, Kanadiga, Bengali etc.. also boast about their community. In reality none of them have any consideration for the other community people when they are in majority.
Is'nt it a basic courtesy to talk in a common language and common subject so that everyone in the group can enjoy what others are enjoying? Why is it that we fail to do it? Why don't we think of others by being in their shoes?
On a different note, A tamil speaking man was interogated at Seatle since a off-duty airport authority suspected him and alerted the flight crew. Click here to read the news article on The Hindu.

Yes, that can get quite unnerving sometimes...but think of it this way, what if the person is not proficient in the common language (mostly english)....they may wish to avoid embarassment.

Well, ppl lack basic etiquette.. All of us know that it is extremely comfortable to converse in the respective mother tongue.. But, decency demands that ppl speak in a common language which everyobody follows..

In work place if a majority of ppl understand one language, the language is commonly used irrespective of the fact that thr might be someone who does not know it.

Well, to conclude -- People lack basic etiquette!

True !! I try to speak in English if I know that there are non-tamil people in the group and in case I or someone blurt out some Tamil Joke, I translate it to the other person. At the same time, when others use their mother tongue, I politely interfere and ask them to speak in English. I think its just carelessness noone wants to offend others wantedly.

Pretty much the same as the other ladies ! There's nothing to be abashed about such situations. But it happens even in colleges, ppl form their own groups according to languages and multi-linguals like me are dragged everywhere!

    KK:

You came up with a good post kk. Many people feel at home once they see their own community ppl. Its ok when they are outside, but not inside the office. Others will always feel insecure if he/she talks about them in a different language.

Say chinese always speak in their language whereever they are. They do not even care if other people will be hurt.

It ok to preserve our culture but not in this way. Indian always divide and rule wherever they go. The first question is are u SI/NI? If so where in SI and all sorts of nonsense. Why can't ppl' accept the truth they r Indians first. You can see not many organization in one single name of Indian but rather divide as G/M/T Associations.

@Prithz - Here take the BS ice cream, Catch it! :)
Oh yeah, forgot the chinkis... They too do it quite often. Well I am also like your friends, If I get offended then I too dont bother to be courteous to them. Tit for tat you see :)

@Ganesh - I agree it will be embarassment, but I feel its ok to talk how much ever they can, I am sure no one is going to make fun. If they still feel like using their mother tongue then they should politely tell the other person that they are going to talk in their language as he feels it will be to converse in it. :)

@Janani - Yeah, but they let the other persom know and then talk in their own language :)

@R.E.B.E.L - Rightly said!! We do lack some basic ettiquette. So creating awareness is the only way to educate people about the ettiquettes. So lets start doing that :)

@Pavithra - Good Job Pavithra, for being considerate for others. :) I too try to do everything that you have mentioned. But sometimes it pisses me off when people continue to talk in their language when I told them that I dont understand them. In that case I just move off from that place. Well sometimes I feel its not only carelessness, its ego too.

@Brute - I am very sorry about the comments section. Sometimes its not possible, its out of my control. We will try to minimise it, In future if you need any translation for a tamil comment feel free to ask me, I will be glad to help you :)

@S0ulasylum - Hey! Whats this 2 mins silence and 2 days dont talk thing? :( Hey trust me I did try to tell you that I changed to beta, but could not catch you. Trust me, ok? :)
So are you telling, I have been posting senseless so many day??? :o Yup its very rude to be non considerate about others in the group. So what do you do in that case?

@Syam - Yup, I agree its carelessness sometimes and lack of basic ettiquette sometimes. But I also feel sometimes its done wantedly. If they do it by carelessness and they correct it then I am fine, else its annoying.
Syam bhyangra thathuvams of India :)

@Rums - Nice display name... But reminds me of Pub :) (Jus Kiddin)
Grouping is another thing, which can be a new post by itself. Me, though not a multi-lingual have faced the problem of being in many groups. Sometimes its very demanding to be on multiple groups :)

@Shankari - True. But sometimes its very difficult to steer people when they are in majority. :)

@Priya - //It ok to preserve our culture but not in this way.//
Very nicely said Priya. Yup, everyone feels insecure if the other people are talking about them in a different language. Thats he reason why many get offended too. Regarding dividing, you got it spot on. I agree with you completely. Depending upon the people around we form subsets. I hate that. Nice points Priya :)

Such things happen very frequently, esp with Northies. When we interrupt they will start start abt Hindi - 'The National Language', etc... and all rubbish. These people don't even know the fact that Hindi is not a National Language, it is just another official language amoung the 22 official languages of India. I have many times argued, but they are never ready to change. Now, I have decided, whenever they talk in Hindi, without speaking anything, I should move away - "dhustanai kandaal dhoora vizhagu".
Never worry abt what noises they make (For me whatever they speak is just a noise). Dont do the same mistake, what these people do.

Good one KK. U know I also used to face this prob (with ppl from another country) & Iused to get so damn annoyed & pissed off abt it. Later on I was trying to think abt it & what I felt was I dont think ppl do this on purpose.
Just that each person is more comfortable talking in their own language wherein they can express better & fail to realise / understand that theres a person who doesnt follow that language. This I feel is the angle from others point of view....but looking @ the same from our own angle it is indeed damn annoying! Maybe a conscious effort shd be taken by all to avoid the same else better to be a linguist!!!

I am not pointing my fingers at anyone, but just telling that each one of us have gone through this but we always blame someone else without realising that even we do it. Yup each one of us need to realize this problem and talk in a common language. :)

@Keshi - Yeah, its very rude and annoying when someone starts with their own language.

@GolmaalGopal - So common language'la pesureengalo illayo... seekiram common language'la thittipeenganu ninaikuren :)

@Reborn - Hey! Welcome here!! Hope to see your around :) Oh yeah! thats one of the worst cases... I am very sorry that it happened to you :( Next time dont agree to them :)

@Has to be me - Welcome back madam :) Well you seem to have taken a matured way of handling this unlike me doing tit for tat :) Thinking about it, I find it difficult to accept that people dont do this on purpose, because all experiences I have had doesnt look like that. But I feel its a good practice to atleast tell the other person that we are going to talk something which the other person might not understand and asking him to excuse them for some time. Yep, I feel a concious effort needs to be taken :)

    Hi KK,
Everyone would have faced this situation some time or the other..
Sometimes we sure get annoyed when people do this wantedly. but sometimes we cannot avoid it.. say for example one of my friend doesn't understand english properly and when we are with other friends, I have to talk with her in tamil and have to translate what others are saying...and translate others what we talk.
As syam said I think only we tamilians dont know hindi well and I really feel bad abt it after coming to US.

I think its ok to speak in any language on your own time. I feel bad for the guy who was speaking tamil and people thought he was a terrorist.
