Indian BPO's in trouble

India has been boasting about the success in Information technology business and BPO business. India is popularly known as the Back office of the World. We have also seen significant boom in economy due to these business'.
A recent news report on a UK based channel called Channel 4 was about the data theft scandal in Indian BPO's. The video of the news report is on the site, Click here to see the report.
The video footage shows a undercover reports names Sue Turton pretending to be a businesswoman from UK who wants to startup her own call center. IBN Live reports about the footage on Channel 4.
Having sent out word that she was looking for "financial information on UK customers for her own agents to target", she meets a "former bank manager" in "a plush hotel" in Delhi.
The man offers financial data of UK customers. He offers "leads" — sensitive, confidential data like credit card details and bank account numbers.
The man shows Turton a sample of these leads, which contained complete information of credit card customers — right from their names, addresses to the three-digit security number behind the cards.
The man says he could source the "leads" for a hundred thousand customers.
Turton claims independent experts in the UK had confirmed that the data was genuine.
Turton then travels to Kolkata where she meets a call centre consultant who offers her details of 200,000 bank customers in the UK and "unlimited leads through brokers".
In the second meeting with Turton, the consultant arrived with actual voice recording of a UK customer. A hidden camera recording of this meeting shows an agent soliciting information from a UK customer and "coaxing" her to hand over her credit card details.
The alleged scam was unearthed during a 12-month probe by its Dispatches programme. The investigation was to expose "data farming — the unauthorised ‘harvesting’ of personal data to be sold on or exchanged for profit."

We need to wait and see if the Indian BPO business is going to face any repercussions because of these events. Wish the people in BPO realize the seriousness of these kind of issues.

That is never going to happen. No problem will ever come to Indian BPOs. The reason is that WE are the cheapest Human Resource available in this planet. No BPO would like to loose ilicha vaayans like us! We do all the work and they take all the credits and ofcourse, Money!!!

    Insightful post...

I guess a couple such events (fiascos) would set things straight... There are always such risks associated besides the benefits... I think whistle-blowing such events will stop them in due course...

This is not something new and has happened before. There will be a huge hue and cry but ultimately i don't think that will affect the BPO market.

good piece of information.. as a matter of fact, China is not exempted too.. this is the biggest problem in out-sourcing critical projects to any developing country..

I think, though this would not affect us, we need to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. With cheap labour from China and other countries if we keep making mistakes then our end is not so far !!

I read about that too....But I don't think Indian BPO's will be in much trouble because of this...NASSCOM has already recommended very strict measures for protecting of sensitive data....

Anyways, these incidents could also happen in other countries...

@BalaG - Yup, correct'a sooneenga :) Welcome to my space BalaG!!! Hope to see you around. :)

@Karthik B.S. - Though we are the cheapest human resource available, we should not be miss using that image. Only when we do good work, we will get more business.

@GolmaalGopal - Yeah, another event occured some time earlier this year too. Yup the whole issue was burried underneath money. But if we continue doing this, some day its going to cost us, people would have started looking at alternate solutions, because of this.

@Manoj - Welcome to my space!!! Hope to see you around. :) Hope it happens like the way you have said. Hope we learn from our mistakes before someone else makes use of the situation.

@Prithz - Yalo the!!! :) Well not too technical, just something that needs to be taken care, and awareness is one such way to take care of this... hence this post... Soon even Bio tech might be outsourced to India, then you will come to know about onsite and offshore :) Until then enjoy!! :) But you should'nt have called G3 Kennai :) BTW no ice cream only puliyotharai :)

@Karthik - Welcome here Karthik!! Keep visiting :) I too hope it doesnt affect our BPO market :)

    @G3 - Dialogue thaane?? :) I gave you puliyotharai ;)

@Syam - They claim that independent experts in the UK had confirmed that the data was genuine. So lots of people will beleive this report.
Atha vidunga... Yenakku ore sogama pochu... after the race i could not sleep at all... I saw the podium ceremony and the press meet after that... @Usha - Iraivan ungalai asirvathipaga :)

@Gils - Whats this BS??? After knowing Prithz only thing that I can think of BS is ButterScotch only :)
It happens in many industries but it causes a huge hue and cry only in this industry :) Yeah you may be correct, someone is trying to tarnish our credibility by creating hype over these :)

@Keshi - Do you think so??? I too thought the same :) lol!!! Only we both seem to understand the gravity of the problem caused by cloning :) lol!! :)

@Venkatesh - Hey there! Yup its one of the main problems faced outsourcing.

@Pavithra - Exactly, thats exactly what I think. Hope problems like these make us loose with other countries such as China.

@Ganesh - NASSCOM has already recommended very strict measure, as G3 said people undergo training on HIPAA and SOX etc.. But there are people who break the law despite all this. Hope we find a way to solve this. It does occur in other countries but we should take care that incidents such as this should not cost us. :)

We have been faced with this problem for sometime now. And i guess, as the attention span increases, so will the problems.

This is a sensitive issue, and i suspect that the BPOs will work aroud this as efficiently as they built their empires in the first place !
