Gender Segregation

I am thinking if gender segregation is really required in India. I feel that only when the people are abstained from getting something they yearn for it. More the demand more precious its going to be (as per Demand-Supply economics). Thinking in this angle, I am wondering if gender segregation is also a primary cause for high occurance of eve teasing in India. An interesting article (Dated: Tuesday, Apr 13, 2004) on Hindu has quoted as follows
An interesting fact needs to be mentioned here. If one types 'eve-teasing' in any internet search engine, you would be surprised that page after page of results are almost entirely Indian web pages. Maybe, other countries refer to this more subtly under 'sexual harassment,' but a cursory survey among frequent travellers to other countries confirms that `eve-teasing' in its form of hooting-ogling-loud commenting-whistling, etc., does tend to be more prevalent in India. Not something to be proud about.

The following is the warning given by the US government to all citizens who travel to India.
Violent crime, especially directed against foreigners, has traditionally been at relatively low levels, although in recent years there has been an apparent increase in violent attacks directed against foreign tourists, including robbery, murder, and sexual assault. These attacks have mainly been directed at women traveling alone, but men have also been victimized. U.S. citizens, particularly women, are cautioned not to travel alone in India. So-called “Eve Teasing” or verbal and sometimes physical harassment of Indian women is not unusual. There have been more reports in the past year of foreign women being harassed in this manner.

If from young age a boy and girl move freely with out any segregation in Bus, School, College, etc. a girl will appear as just another human being to a boy (Anything in abundance looses its value) and vice versa . Once every guy and girl gets that feeling of equality I think eve tesing and adam teasing will all come to an end.
So I think the society has a big role in solving the problem of eve teasing.
BTW, does gender segregation help in anyway? I am not able to think of anything other than a girl's parent feeling more secure.

    Good thoughts KK!!!

I am sick of this eve-teasing stuff. I hate to go out shopping with my friends.. once, when i was riding my bike, 2 guys came speeding towards me, and suddenly, the guy at the back stretched out his hand right into my face!! I was blinded for a moment. i moved away and slowed down the vehicle. Those 2 id#o@s, later went away laughing. I would have really hurt myself if i had not reacted fast enough. i was so angry that day...

Somethimes people can get co crazy and irresponsible. Its the uneducated population that goes abt doin this..

Good thinking KK. Not only does it help the girl's parents but also the girl herself who will be more happy & at ease without any such abuses.

Regd the gender segregation perse, agree with u but it shd not be done overly as well as that might lead to other problems. But yes from the young age the girls & boys must be allowed to mingle freely without any quams so that such teasing / harrasement can be avoided. Also they youth must be educated on this & they must learn to treat women with more respect & I guess that wud help solve this issue to an extent.

It is so shameful to read the article from the US Govt. Surely doest speak too high abt India.

i dont think it helps in anyway.. if nothing it only increases curiosity and confusion levels in the minds of young adolescents. I rem this one time I was in chennai, for a technical paper presentation at a very reputed college, I was told that I was not to speak to the guys and that all the girls were asked to follow the same rule and on violation they faced actions as extreme as expulsion. They even tied a rope somewhere in the bus separating the girl-guy domains. I mean how ridiculous is that? I was shocked to see this kind of behavior in this day & age. Its sad but prevelant and no one is doing anythg about it.
Also, I think our judicial system lets go too easily.

    Good post !!

I personally feel ..this problem would come to an end only if each individual realizes the seriousness of this issue.

@Prithz - Sorry to hear about your experience. But we cant blame the uneducated population alone, even the educated indulge in such things. Its basically the mind set.

@Has to be me - Yup, I agree with you, any thing is good only when available in moderation. Parents should set an example on how to treat women, the child will surely learn from them.

@S0ulasylum - Is the name of that institute Satyabama by any chance. I have heard that the college strict about girls and boys not talking. God save this college. I told my parents that I will never join that college for this reason.

@Pavithra - Yes true, this problem will be solved only when each individual takes concious effort to respect each other.
Welcome Pavithra!, hope to see you around.

@Shuba - You are rite, decent guy will be decent where ever he is, but this is not a solution for this problem. We need to make the indecent to also decent, so I am trying to analyze the cause so that we can find the right solution. Everyone can't be like Syam. :)

@Syam - Director Shankar maathiri naanum samuthaya unarchi udan irukiren :) Syam neenga nallavara kettavara? *Nayagan theme music*

There are other ways of curbing eve teasing...gender segregration is a dumb method. In tamil nadu most colleges practise these methods and it dfntly doesnt help.

@Arpita - Yup, Gender segregation actually widens the gap and does not curb eve-teasing in any way. Sorry that Tamil nadu is following gender segregation religiously.

    @Smiley - Yup, Co-eds are the initial steps :)

@S0ulasylum - Gotcha! I dont think any other institute treats students in such a way other than Satyabama and RMKV. Its really pathetic, C'mon people in college are old enough to understand things.

Yeah Sathyabhama is definetley an example in gender segregation...they have partitions in buses, canteen,classroom...everything...Boys and girls are not allowed to even talk to each other.

If Jeppiar is so damn worried,he should have built seperate colleges not a co-ed. The discipline is just a gimmick to invite over-cautious parents to get their kids admitted there

Ganesh - well said.. Its not only in SatyaBhama.. I asked the same question to my department HOD once. I heard its like only collecting fines in some colleges..in some others its worse, physical and verbal abuse, ill-treatment in labs..what not !!

i agree with ganesh on the point of making separate colleges if you really dont want communication of any kind between the two! after having studied in co-educational institutions all my life.. and liberal ones at that.. i dont understand the concept at all! and having lived in the hostel of that college(st josephs/sathyabama) for a coupla days, i have also witnessed what lengths the students go to .. to go against the institution rules and do whatever it is that they want to! so technically.. its all just a big joke! :)

@Pavithra - Very True. Oh! how much these lecturers love taking revenge during the labs exams.

@S0ulasylum - I agree with you, only when there is restriction, students go beyond their way to go against the institution. Curiosity kills the cat.

Changing our culture is difficult.Hence the existing situation should be rectified. The main problem with our society is that boys are not controlled only girls are. Parents should guide and teach their sons to respect other girls. Moreover laws should be restrict. Most of all movies should be banned. They are the main reason of rape.
